The next-gen Mahindra Thar will be more feature-rich than the current outgoing model. It will be equipped with a manually operated four-wheel-drive system.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar will reportedly share an updated ladder-frame chassis with the next-gen Mahindra Scorpio. Spy shots suggest that it will likely be longer and wider than the outgoing model. It will also be strong enough to pass the crash tests under BNVSAP, and previous reports also say that two different roof options are planned for the next-gen Thar.

“The Thar vehicle, also, since we are developing new Thar vehicle, and it will be available as a BS-VI vehicle from April, the current Thar which is on the CRDe engine and the DI engine, disappears." said, Rajan Wadhera, President, Mahindra and Mahindra (Automotive), while talking about models that will be discontinued because of the new safety and emission norms at the annual Analyst Meet this year.

The new model is likely to be more road-oriented and thus will be comfortable to drive. It will have a fresh suspension setup (with less travel) at the front making it more road worthy than the outgoing model. Also, it will likely be more spacious and comfort-oriented. It is expected to come with a redesigned dashboard, new multi-function steering wheel, new instrument panel with an MID and a touchscreen infotainment system.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar will most likely employ an all-new 2.0-litre diesel engine which is likely to be tuned to deliver 140PS and a peak torque of 300 Nm. The oil-burner is expected to come mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. When launched, it will rival the likes of next-gen Force Gurkha.
