The next generation of Mercedes's flagship SUV, the GL Class, will get a long wheelbase Pullman variant, says a report from German car magazine Auto Bild.
The LWB GL Class would be Merc's answer to the growing demand for luxurious off-roaders. The Range Rover long wheelbase, which was introduced last year, is one of the most premium SUVs money can buy currently. Going forth, traditional luxury car makers like Rolls Royce and Bentley will bring out their respective competitors, not to mention mainstream luxury brands like Audi and BMW who have confirmed plans for a Q8 and X7 respectively.
The Stuttgart-based car maker does not want to miss out on the action and is reportedly developing the LWB GL Class based on the next generation GL's platform. According to the report, the LWB GL Class will have as much rear knee-room as the Maybach 62.
The SUV will boast of features such as air suspension with 'kneeling function' (wherein the car lowers itself for easier ingress/egress), electrically adjustable reclining rear seats, full leather interior, business package with foldable tables and integrated chargers, and a complete entertainment system.
The LWB GL Class is expected in early 2019. Given India's affinity for the rear seat, Mercedes India would do well to bring the LWB GL to its family.
