Suzuki Motorcycle replaces Hero MotoCorp as third highest scooter seller

A positive first half of FY2019-20 has helped Suzuki Motorcycle India to climb the ladder of highest scooter selling brands in our market. The Indian arm of the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer has replaced Hero MotoCorp as the third-highest scooter seller in our market.

Suzuki Motorcycle India reported a 17.16% growth and registered 3,41,928 unit sales in H1 2019 as against 2,91,847 units in H1 2018. Hero MotoCorp, on the other hand, clocked 2,49,365 unit sales in H1 2019 as against 3,91,019 units in H1 2018, registering a fall of 36.23%. Suzuki Motorcycle India was the only company to report positive sales performance in the scooter space in H1 2019 (vs H1 2018). The Access 125 is the highest selling scooter in the brand’s Indian portfolio. Check out the sales performance of the Suzuki Access 125 below (April-August 2019):

Both, the Suzuki Burgman Street and the Access 125, share their underpinnings and engine specifications, but they are distinguished by their respective styling. The Burgman Street features a maxi-scooter design while the Access 125 gets retro-styling. The engine specifications on both scooters include a 125 cc air-cooled, SOHC, 2-valve, single-cylinder engine that pumps out 8.7 PS at 7,000 rpm and 10.2 Nm at 5,000 rpm. The Burgman Street retails at INR 70,312*, while the Access 125 is available from INR 58,323* onwards.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India continue to lead the segment, and despite a 20.63% fall (H1 2019 vs H1 2018), the company still have a massive advantage over its rivals. It sold 17,32,579 units in H1 2019 as against 21,82,860 units in H1 2018. TVS Motor Company occupies the second spot with 5,98,617 unit sales in H1 2019 as against 6,44,981 units in H1 2018.

The Burgman Street sales also helped the brand to clock better sales. The majority numbers, however, came from the Access 125.

The two-wheeler brands have announced various festive season offers to boost sales during the high demand period. Hero MotoCorp had announced a special offer on its complete scooter range (available between 16 August and 14 September), although the company delivered a 20.4% in year-on-year numbers in the last month. The company sold 6,12,204 units in September this year as against 7,69,138 units in the corresponding month last year. It has decided to skip Auto Expo 2020 to avoid unwanted expenses.
