Bajaj Auto and KTM are working on a high-end electric motorcycle, Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto, has confirmed. Speaking to Moneycontrol, Sharma said that the Indian brand is open to the full spectrum, and it is working with its strategic partner.

Sharma did not reveal the finer details, but below is what he said in the interview:

At this stage I can say that we are entering two-wheelers. We are not ready to say whether it’s a scooter or a motorcycle but we are open to the full spectrum and we are working very closely with our strategic partner KTM to look at electric solution for high-end motorcycle also.

Another report from June this year stated that Bajaj Auto and KTM would develop a common 48-volt electric two-wheeler platform. The new platform will reportedly underpin products with a power output in the range of 3 to 10 kW. The vehicles based on the common platform will be produced in India, and their production will reportedly commence by 2022.

Meanwhile, Bajaj Auto is working on its electric scooter that will arrive under the Urbanite brand. This scooter has been spotted on various occasions in the past and will reportedly be launched towards the end of 2019.

Various spy images have revealed the front fascia and the rear of the upcoming electric scooter. The retro-style scooter will feature a pentagon-shaped headlight with curved lines. The design strikes a perfect balance between retro and modern styling. Located near the handlebar, the headlamp will most likely be an LED unit. The electric scooter will also get backlit switchgear – a feature that we have seen on Bajaj and KTM range of motorcycles.

The rear section will pack a split-style LED tail light. The pillion grab rail design gets a thicker centre portion. Other styling cues include a circular shape for the instrument console and a triangular shape for the rear-view mirrors to further enhance the retro styling. Expect the feature list to include chrome highlights, a USB port and a decent under-seat storage space.

The Government of India plans to achieve mass-electrification of two-wheelers (under 150 cc) by 2025. Currently, no major brand has an electric two-wheeler in its India portfolio.
