Bajaj Auto could make a Tesla in electric two-wheelers, says Rajiv Bajaj

Bajaj Auto is developing electric two-wheelers under the ‘Urbanite’ brand. Rajiv Bajaj has now revealed that it plans to make a Tesla in two-wheelers space.

Rajiv Bajaj has hinted that Bajaj Auto could launch an electric motorcycle or a scooter or both if the opportunity is right.

Speaking to PTI News about Bajaj’s upcoming electric two-wheeler, Rajiv Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Auto, said:

We could have made a Tesla on two-wheels or a Tesla on three-wheels and created different news. We will try and do that in 2019 now.

In July, Rajiv Bajaj revealed that the Bajaj Urbanite electric two-wheeler will be launched before April 2020. The head honcho further hinted that Bajaj Auto could introduce an electric motorcycle or a scooter or both. The company’s electric vehicle business is headed by Mr Sumeet Narang, former Vice President (Marketing), Bajaj Auto.

In September, the company showcased the Bajaj RE Electric rickshaw at the MOVE 2018 summit. Bajaj Auto is also developing an electric version of the Bajaj Qute quadricycle, while the petrol version is slated to launch in new markets in the coming months.

Coming back to the electric two-wheelers, the company is looking at introducing disruptive products in the EV space. The Tesla reference hints at a premium vehicle with higher range and performance. The company could be developing performance-oriented motorcycles in the niche segment and a long-range electric scooter with advanced telematics.

Powertrain and battery details are scarce, and more information will be released closer to the launch. With electric vehicles coming from Ather, Emflux, TVS Motor Company and Suzuki among others, the future is undoubtedly greener and promising. On a side note, Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles are set to formally announce their product strategy in the coming months.
