The current Hyundai Xcent is instantly recognisable as the sedan version of the current Hyundai Grand i10 (codename: Hyundai A13). The next generation models will look quite different, though, as per a new report from Autocar India.
The next-gen Hyundai Xcent will have an individual design, to not look just a boot-ed version of its donor, suggests the report. It will have its own identity. Honda has adopted the same strategy for the Amaze in its second generation and has the results to show for it.
Hyundai giving a distinguishing design to the 4-door version is a welcome move, and we hope they also address the tacky spelling and revert it to 'Accent.'
Already measuring 3,995 mm in length, the Hyundai Xcent doesn’t have much room to grow in length with the full model change. It should go wider, though, from currently 1,660 mm. One can also expect longer rear doors and proportions closer to an actual sedan.
Hyundai could offer the next-gen Xcent with a BS-VI compliant 1.2-litre Kappa naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. Heavy costs of upgrading the 1.2-litre UII turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine to meet the new emission norms and the diminishing demand for diesel engines in entry-level cars puts a question mark on its continuation. However sales of the 'Prime' version is driven by diesel and Hyundai may not be able to take the diesel out of production very easily given it contributes almost 40% of the tally.
The 4-speed automatic transmission will get replaced by the 5-speed Smart Auto automated manual transmission from the 2019 Hyundai Santro. A 5-speed manual transmission should remain the standard offering, though. A pure electric variant is under consideration.
