The 2019 Hyundai Santro has been launched in India at a starting price of INR 3.89 lakhs. Targeted primarily at first-time car buyers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, the new model rivals the likes of Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Renault Kwid 1.0, and Tata Tiago.
Like its predecessor, the 2019 Hyundai Santro has a tallboy design. Its front-end features a large cascading grille, swept-back headlamps, and high-set foglamps. The side profile features a kink in the beltline, ORVMs with traffic indicators, and an arrow-shaped character line on the front fender and the door. The rear features a dual-tone bumper, neatly sculpted tailgate and slightly small tail lights. The new model is available in seven colour options - Typhoon Silver, Polar White, Stardust, Imperial Beige, Marina Blue, Fiery Red, and Diana Green.
The interior of the 2019 Hyundai Santro carries a beige-black colour theme. Furthermore, the Dyna Green paint shade offers colour-coordinated interior trim on the seatbelts, upholstery stitching, A/C knobs and switches of the infotainment unit. The highlight of the dashboard is an elephant-inspired centre console with a dedicated area for the placement of a God idol. The high-end trim feature a 6.94-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay support. The dashboard offers a storage space above the glovebox that can easily carry knick-knacks like a smartphone, wallet, keys, etc. The front door pockets can easily hold a 1-litre water bottle each.
The new model is available in five trims - D-lite, Era, Magna, Sportz, and Asta. All the models offer ABS with EBD, driver-side airbag, engine immobiliser, child safety door locks, champagne gold interior garnish, and driver-side seatbelt warning. As per the manufacturer, the all-new Santro offers a class-leading AC, with a 135cc compressor. It also provides first-in-segment rear AC vent. The top-spec Asta trim is on sale with dual front airbags, turn indicators on outside door mirrors, central locking, front fog lamps, rear defogger, day and night interior rearview mirror, front seatbelt pre-tensioners with load limiters, rear parking sensors with camera, speed-sensing door lock, impact-sensing door unlock, wheel covers, and eco-coating technology for the air-conditioning.
The 2019 Hyundai Santro is underpinned by the K1 platform, which is, in essence, a derivative of the Grand i10's BA platform. The new model is available in two fuel options - Petrol and CNG. Powering the car is a 1.1-litre four-cylinder motor that outputs 69 PS at 5,500 rpm and 10.4 kgm at 4,500 rpm for the petrol version. For the CNG variant, it outputs 59 PS at 5,500 rpm and 8.6 kgm at 4,500 rpm. The petrol version offers a claimed fuel economy of 20.3 km/l. The CNG model comes with an 8 kg fuel tank and benefits from a Dual ECU setup along with Matrix Injection and Filler Valve with Micro Switch.
The petrol version of the Hyundai Santro is available with two transmission options - 5-speed manual and 5-speed SmartAuto AMT. The CNG version is available only with the former. While the AMT is reserved for the Magna, Sportz, and Asta trims of the petrol-powered variant, the CNG model is available in the Magna and Sportz options only.
The new model is 3,610 mm long, 1,645 mm wide, and 1,560 mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2,400 mm. The D-Lite, Era, and Magna trim ride on 13-inch steel wheels shod with 155/80-spec tires. The Sportz and Asta trim feature 14-inch steel wheels with 165/70-spec tires. Suspension components include a MacPherson strut with a stabiliser bar at the front and a Coupled Torsion Beam setup at the rear.
