While the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 is a neo-retro café racer, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is a modern classic roadster.

Royal Enfield showcased the Interceptor 650 and the Continental GT 650 at the EICMA 2017, and the 650 twins were expected to make the market debuts by April 2018. However, the delay in launch is attributed to Royal Enfield wanting to have enough stocks before launch and also making sure every model was built to the highest standards. Siddhartha Lal confirmed in May that Royal Enfield would launch the 650 twins in India in the ‘next few months.’

The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is a neo-classic roadster with its round fuel tank, raised handlebar, flat seat, and round headlamp. On the other hand, the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 is a quintessential café racer that features a round headlight, teardrop fuel tank, clip-on handlebars and a single café racer-style seat. Both bikes share the chassis, engine, wire-spoke wheels, suspension setup, and tires but receive different ergonomics.

The Royal Enfield 650 twins employ an all-new 648 cc, oil-cooled, 8-valve, SOHC, parallel twin engine with fuel injection that is tuned to pump out a maximum power of 47 bhp at 7,100 rpm while developing a peak torque of 52 Nm at 5,250 rpm. The company has designed its first 6-speed gearbox that works in sync with the engine, while the motorcycles also feature a standard slipper clutch.

The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 and the Interceptor 650 use 41 mm front telescopic forks and twin coil-over gas-charged shock absorbers at the rear. The bikes come with 18-inch wire-spoke wheels that wrap on Pirelli Phantom Sportscomp tires at front and back. Braking power comes from disc brakes at both the ends with standard dual-channel ABS.

The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 has a fuel tank capacity of 13.7 litres and a kerb weight of 203 kg. On the other hand, the Continental GT 650 receives a smaller fuel tank capacity of 12.5 litres, while it tips the scales at 199 kg.

The Royal Enfield 650 twins are likely to get a price tag in the vicinity of INR 3 lakh (ex-showroom). The motorcycles will rival the Harley Davidson Street 750, Kawasaki Vulcan S and the Harley Davidson Street Rod.
