Volvo is offering the XC40 only in the feature-rich R-Design spec. There are only three dual tone exterior colour options on offer - Crystal White (pictured above), Bursting Blue, and Passion Red (pictured below).

A panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, power operated tailgate, Park Pilot Assist, 9-inch touchscreen setup for the Sensus infotainment system, and a 13-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system are some of the highlights of the Volvo XC40. A long list of safety features including Radar Based Active Safety suite underline Volvo's focus on occupant protection.

The Volvo XC40 is the first product based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform developed jointly by Volvo and its owners Geely. Under the hood resides a 2.0 L diesel engine. In its D4-spec, the 4-cylinder unit churns out 190 PS at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm at 1,750-2,500 rpm routing power to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. There are five drive modes to choose from - Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, Off-Road, and Individual.

The R-Design grade gets a dual tone treatment and 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels as standard. Crystal White, Bursting Blue, and Passion Red are the only exterior colour options. Rivals of the Volvo XC40 are the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz, GLA, Mini Countryman, and the Audi Q3.
