Hyundai launched the i20 facelift at the 2018 Auto Expo. However, the 2018 Hyundai i20 petrol automatic variant is yet to go on sale. Hyundai will launch the i20 with a CVT in May this year.
At the Auto Expo, HMIL officials confirmed that petrol variant of the i20 paired with a CVT will reach showroom in May. For now, the hatchback is available with a 1.2 L Kappa petrol and a 1.4 L U2 CRDi diesel engine mated to a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed manual transmission respectively.
Hyundai introduced the i20 with a 1.4 L petrol engine mated to a 4-speed torque converter in September 2016 priced at INR 9.02 lakhs (ex-showroom). The variant was only available in the mid-level Magna grade. The application of a 1.4 L engine meant it attracted higher tax and the price was driven up further thanks to the use of gearbox that had to be imported. Even in its top-end trim, the Maruti Baleno 1.2 CVT was much cheaper than the i20 ensuring demand was low. The decision to equip the 1.2 L petrol engine with a CVT will help Hyundai price the i20 automatic competitively.
