Expected to launch in Korea this year.

Chinese publication, AutoHome, reports that the next-generation 2017 Hyundai Verna will have a wheelbase spanning 2,600 mm. In comparison to the current Fluidic Verna, it would appear that the next-gen model sees a wheelbase extension of 30 mm.

The Honda City, the new Verna's main rival, has a 2,600 mm wheelbase too.

The 2,600 mm point is a crucial benchmark for Hyundai's engineers, as the mid-size sedan segment's best seller, the Honda City, has a 2,600 mm wheelbase. However, the benchmark in the wheelbase department would still be the Maruti Ciaz (sold in China as the Suzuki Alivio) which puts 2,650 mm between the front and rear wheels.

Hyundai previewed the design of the 2017 Verna by way of the Verna concept at the Auto China 2016. Sporting an all-new design, reports anticipate a launch in the Korean market towards the end of this year. An Indian launch is expected to take place next year.

A 7-speed DCT is anticipated on the new Verna diesel.

According to the Chinese report, Hyundai will employ 1.4- and 1.6-liter engines in the 2017 Verna. For the Indian market, expect the 1.4- and 1.6-liter CRDi diesel engines and a 1.6-liter petrol unit. Transmission choices would include 6-speed manual and automatic and possibly a 7-speed DCT as well.

The Hyundai Verna has lost a significant chunk of its market share owing to newer offerings such as the Honda City and Maruti Ciaz. As such, the 2017 Verna has a challenging job of clawing up the ladder.
