Iconic Defender went out of production in January 2016.
The Land Rover Defender went out of production in January this year. The next-gen Land Rover Defender is one of the most anticipated vehicles to be introduced by a British automaker later this decade. Land Rover introduced the Land Rover DC100 and Land Rover DC100 Sport Defender Concept in 2011 to preview a possible design of the next generation Land Rover, which is expected to be available in five body styles.
Now, speculative renderings from automotive illustrators at Avarvarii show how the next-gen Land Rover Defender range may look like.
It remains to be seen if Land Rover goes for a ladder-frame chassis like the recently axed iconic model or a new monocoque chassis to make it more welcoming to the new Land Rover family of SUVs that use an aluminium monocoque chassis. Its arch rival, the Jeep Wrangler, though, will reportedly retain the ladder-frame construction in its next generation. Moving back to the British utility vehicle, there will be at least two wheelbases as multiple body styles are to be offered.
The all-new Land Rover Defender is believed to be still a few years away from going on sale, although a near-production concept may be shown in 2018 to calm those anxiously waiting to buy one. The recently discontinued Defender was made in Solihull, UK, but that doesn’t mean Land Rover will definitely continue keeping the vehicle truly British, as Land Rover could make it at the new Jaguar Land Rover plant in Slovakia, or outsource it to Graz, Austria-based Magna Steyr which is the contract manufacturer of the German-rival, the Mercedes G-Class.
