Expected to launch in 2018.
At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, VW unveiled the VW T-Cross Breeze concept, indicating at a future VW Polo-based crossover. Based on the concept, automotive illustrator Jan Kamenistiak has created a rendering of the production VW Polo-based crossover. The concept was showcased as a convertible crossover, but it’s clear VW is focusing only on volumes for the Polo, with reports saying the 3-door hatchback version is to be axed in the next generation.
The VW T-Cross Breeze concept measures 4,133 mm in length, 1,798 mm in width and 1,563 m in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,565 mm. Similar dimensions are expected in the production version which will likely hit the market sometime after the next-gen 2017 VW Polo is launched next year. As the concept is a convertible, the boot volume is limited to just around 300 litres, but it will be much more in the production version.
The VW Polo-based crossover will be underpinned by the VW Group’s MQB platform and will be offered with engines and many other elements from the hatchback it will be based on. The T-Cross Breeze concept is powered by a 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine that develops 110 PS (109 hp) and 175 Nm of torque and its production version will likely also be offered with engines that small.
Moving up the range though, there may be more powerful TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines with displacements up to 1.5-litre. VW is reportedly working on new 1.0- and 1.5-litre engines and these engines should be offered in the next-gen VW Polo and the crossover based on it.
