The 911 Carrera and Carrera S get a turbocharged flat-six engine.
Porsche has unveiled the 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S (991.2) at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. Other than the exterior and interior tweaks, the biggest change of them all is the new 3.0-liter turbocharged flat-six engine, which is a first for the 911 Carrera lineup that includes the 911 Carrera, 911 Carrera S, 911 Carrera Cabriolet, and 911 Carrera S Cabriolet.
The front gets the signature round headlamps that features distinctive four-point DRLs and huge air intakes. The sides has inset door handles without recess covers, while the rear-end features revised tail lights, vertical louvres for the engine cover, vents on the bumper and dual exhaust tips.
The interior comes with a new seven-inch touchscreen that has a new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) and online navigation. This unit can support Android and Apple smartphones through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi as well multi-touch and handwriting inputs. The navigation system also comes integrated with Google Earth and Google Streetview.
The Carrera comes with a new version of Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard. This system can lower the height of the car by 10 mm thus improving handling stability around corners. The Carrera S gets the active rear-axle steering as an optional, a feature also found in the hardcore 911 GT3.
The 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S derive power from a turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six engine. Power has been bumped by 20 hp and 60 Nm over the outgoing models. In the entry-level Carrera, this engine has an output of 370 hp and 450 Nm, while the Carrera S produces 420 hp and 500 Nm. Transmission options for both models are a 7-speed manual or Porsche’s 7-speed PDK automated manual gearbox, transferring drive to the rear wheels.
Equipped with the PDK gearbox and Sport Chrono package, the Carrera completes the 0-100 kmph sprint in 4.2 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 183 mph (294.5 km/h). The Carrera S with the same configuration takes 3.9 seconds to hit 100 kmph from standstill, and can reach a top speed of 191 mph (307.3 km/h).
