Gets two clutches similar to a DSG.

The Suzuki S-Cross DDiS diesel will now get an automatic transmission for the U.K. market, the company announced in a statement. Until now, the S-Cross diesel in Europe was available exclusively with a 6-speed manual, in 2WD and 4WD guises. Now though, the diesel S-Cross TCSS (Twin Clutch System by Suzuki) will be sold with the AllGrip AWD model.

The S-Cross TCSS will be available only with the AWD model.

The TCSS is a six-speed automated manual transmission (AMT), but gets two hydraulically controlled clutches, similar to DSG. One clutch is in-charge of gears 1, 3 and 5, while the second clutch controls gears 2, 4 and 6. Suzuki's engineers seem to have combined the dual-clutch technology in the cost effective package of an AMT. The desired gear will be "instantly available" on the TCSS according to the company.

In addition, the S-Cross DDiS TCSS will also get steering wheel mounted paddle shifters should the driver prefer manual control. The engine, a Fiat-sourced 1.6-liter MultiJet with 120 PS and 320 Nm of torque, remains unchanged though.

Compared to the S-Cross DDiS AllGrip manual, the TCSS variant features slightly taller gearing and an increase in weight of 30 kg. As a result, fuel efficiency takes a hit of 0.49 km/l while CO2 emissions are higher by 4g/km.

Compared to the manual variant though, the TCSS is 1,350 pounds (INR 1.34 lakhs) more expensive. For the Indian market, the S-Cross is expected only with a manual transmission, at least initially.
