New variants will also be launched next year.
Volvo Auto India launched the new 2015 XC90 this week, and plans to import 350 units of the SUV this year. However, reports predict that orders for the second generation XC90 in India will be close to 450-500 units, this year alone.
The Swedish car maker would be unable to import more units of the XC90, as the mother plant in Gothenburg is running at full capacity. The plant will make about 55,000 units of the XC90 this year, but has already received orders for 30,000 units. Volvo had to start a third production shift earlier this month to cater to the increased demand.
Next year though, Volvo Auto India plans on importing around 1,000 units of the XC90 as Volvo plans on manufacturing 90,000 units worldwide, Tomas Ernberg, managing director of Volvo Auto India told Autocar India.
The new XC90 is available in India in two trims - Momentum and Inscription - priced at INR 64.9 lakhs and INR 77.9 lakhs respectively, ex-Showroom, Mumbai pre-Octroi. The XC90 for India is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine producing 225 bhp and 470 Nm of torque matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
