The 2015 Honda Jazz will be positioned in the premium hatchback segment, and will compete primarily with the Hyundai Elite i20, VW Polo and the Fiat Punto Evo. On price though, the Jazz will also rival the mid- and top-end variants of the Maruti Swift and Tata Bolt.
On paper, the Jazz is the third longest in overall length, and second longest when wheelbase is considered. The Elite i20 offers a class-leading wheelbase length, while the Swift has the smallest.
The Jazz offers a class-leading 354 liter boot, and its closest competitor, the Elite i20 has a 285 liter boot. The Swift has the smallest boot in this segment.
Power for the Jazz diesel comes from the 1.5-liter four-cylinder i-DTEC diesel engine good for 100 PS and 200 Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. The power-weight ratio for the Jazz diesel is not available at the moment, as Honda Cars India are yet to disclose the kerb weight of the diesel variants.
The Elite i20 relies on the 1.4-liter four-cylinder CRDi diesel engine, good for 90 PS and 220 Nm of torque. The i20, like the Jazz, offers a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Swift, Punto Evo and the Bolt make use of the same 1.3-liter Fiat MultiJet diesel engine. On the Swift and Bolt, this engine makes 75 PS and 190 Nm of torque, whereas on the Punto Evo, it is offered in states of 76 PS and 93 PS. All three cars get a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Finally, the VW Polo gets its power from the new 1.5-liter four-cylinder TDI engine, which develops 90 PS in its regular state and 105 PS on the GT TDI. A 5-speed manual is once again standard though. The Polo puts out the highest power-weight ratio in its segment, while the GT TDI makes an unmatched 91.46 PS/tonne.
The Jazz offers the 1.2-liter i-VTEC petrol engine in a 90 PS/110 Nm state, the Elite i20 too gets a 1.2-liter VTVT engine developing 83 PS and 114.7 Nm of torque. The standard Polo is powered by a three-cylinder 1.2-liter MPI engine, while the more powerful GT TSI gets a four-cylinder turbocharged 1.2-liter TSI engine paired exclusively to a 7-speed DSG.
The Bolt is another vehicle in this category which gets a turbocharged petrol engine. The 1.2-liter Revotron engine is solely offered with a 5-speed manual though. Fiat will give owners a choice between 1.2- and 1.4-liter FIRE petrol engine, the latter capable of 90 PS and 115 Nm of torque. The Swift meanwhile is powered by a 1.2-liter K-Series engine good for 84.3 PS and 115 Nm of torque.
The Polo GT TSI makes a class-leading 94.67 PS/tonne, followed by the Swift's 87.35 PS/tonne and the Jazz's 86.2 PS/tonne. The 1.2-liter Punto Evo makes the lowest 61.53 PS/tonne in this segment.
Buyers on the lookout for an automatic transmission need to consider between the Jazz CVT and the Polo GT TSI. The manual variants of all cars get a 5-speed manual transmission.
The diesel Jazz is claimed to return a class-leading figure of 27.3 km/l while the Swift diesel comes next at 25.2 km/l. Despite offering 20+ km/l, the Polo is the least efficient of the lot.
Coming to the petrol segment, the Swift leads the pack with an efficiency of 20.4 km/l, followed by the Jazz CVT's 19 km/l. The Polo is once again the least efficient of the lot.
