The BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor has been shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show today. Though the CAT (Concept Active Tourer) Outdoor concept was previously shown at the OutDoor Friedrichshafen fair in July, this is the motor show debut and also the first time we are seeing it live.
The CAT Outdoor will be among the first in a list of 20 front wheel drive BMW and Minis to be made. Power comes from a transversely mounted 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine along with a plug-in hybrid electric motor. It will be based on the BMW UKL platform, which will first be seen on the next generation Mini debuting at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show.
As the name 'Outdoor' signifies, this car is for the outdoorsy person who likes to cycle and more importantly carry his/her cycle along while traveling. Hence, the rear compartment of this concept can accommodate two bicycles.
According to BMW, the concept car "presents solutions that take a fresh route to combining sporting aesthetics and style with sustainable drive technology, compact dimensions and functionality".
The CAT Outdoor could be known as the 1 Series/2 Series GT when it enters production next year. A 7-seater version of the CAT has also been planned with early development mules being spied across Europe.
