At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show this March, the BMW 3 Series GT had its world premiere and European deliveries have also commenced since. Autocar India now reports that BMW India could launch the 3 Series GT at the 2014 Auto Expo in February next year.
BMW positions their 'GT' range of cars in a rather unique way. They say that the GTs offer the interior space and boot capacity of an SUV, the styling of a coupe and the driving dynamics of a sedan.
For example, the 3 GT is 200mm longer, 19mm wider and 79mm taller than the 3 Series sedan. The 110mm of extra wheelbase in the GT ensures that rear seat passengers get 5 Series like legroom and space. Even the boot, which can accommodate 1,600 liters of your stuff (with rear seats folded) is much larger than that of the 3 sedan.
The 3 GT if launched, will be imported as a CBU. Pricing is expected north of INR 45 lakhs and it is highly likely that only diesel models would be offered.
BMW already sells the 5 Series GT in India. However, sales of the 5 GT are nowhere near that of the 5 Series, or even the 7 Series for that matter. Given that the 5 GT uses a chopped platform of the 7 Series, the car is already overpriced in international markets. Being imported into India as a CBU, the added taxes ensure that prices are above INR 82 lakhs!
