New details about Volkswagen’s MQB A0 IN SUV for India have emerged today, including the technical specifications and the comfort and convenience aspects.
According to a new report from Autocar India, the VW MQB A0 IN SUV will feature the 10.25-inch (133 dpi) Active Info Display virtual instrument cluster of the VW T-Cross, which sits on the MQB A0 platform. At the moment, no B-SUV in India comes with a fully digital instrument cluster, but the Kia SP2i that will arrive later this year is expected to come with this feature that is seen in only luxury models in our market.
Another element the two SUVs will share will be the engines. The Indian model will come with the 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, most likely in the 115 PS/200 Nm version, and the 1.5-litre TSI-Evo turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. The 1.0-litre engine is going to be locally manufactured, while the 1.5-litre engine will most likely be imported.
The 1.5-litre TSI-Evo engine produces 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque and is equipped with Active Cylinder Management, Volkswagen’s branding for cylinder deactivation in the T-Cross. In the Indian SUV too, it will come with the fuel-sipping technology, but in the 130 PS version that propels the Golf internationally. The same engine, in the same or a different tuning, will power the Skoda Scala, if launched.
Transmission choices in the VW MQB A0 IN SUV would include 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. Both will send power to the front wheels only, as the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system is not planned for offer in any MQB A0 IN products confirmed for India so far.
The EU-spec VW T-Cross has a 2,563 mm wheelbase, but the Indian SUV will have a longer wheelbase, maybe 2,651 mm like the LATAM-spec T-Cross, that allows for more space for the rear-seat passengers. Not just that, the latter will feature a more masculine design and a higher ground clearance.

At Auto Expo 2020, Skoda will unveil the Volkswagen Group's first-ever SUV based on the MQB A0 IN platform in concept form, with the production version following by the end of the year. Volkswagen's SUV based on the same platform will also follow the same year, as per the report. Both models will compete with the Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks and Suzuki S-Cross.
