Volkswagen has showcased the Golf GTE Sport Concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car made its debut in May at the Worthersee GTI meeting in Austria.

The Golf GTE Sport is made out of lightweight carbon and features a striking design with the signature C-pillar getting a two-tier design that was first seen on the 2007 Golf GTI W12-650. The airstream flows between these two levels thus doing the dual role of increasing downforce and cooling the rear brake system.

The body is painted in pearlescent “White Club” and has gullwing doors that swing forwards while opening. The lower portion of the doors has a splitter which is again an aerodynamic element. The sides also feature 20-inch alloys with 235 section tyres at the front and 275 section at the rear.

The front is an indication of how future Golf GT models could look like. The striking blue radiator grille line has been moved below the bonnet and is seen above the sleek and sharp LED lights which also have C-shaped LED DRLs. At the lower portion there are three crossbars covering the entire front area and are flanked on either side by high gloss black air intakes having a honeycomb mesh grille.

The Golf GTE Sport Concept gets a unique 400 PS plug-in hybrid drive system which has the combustion engine placed at the front and an electric motor placed on each axle. The IC engine is the 1.6-liter TSI engine that has been taken from the Polo R WRC car and modified for the concept, it produces 295 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The electric motor at the front is placed next to the 6-speed DCT gearbox housing and generates 107 hp and 330 Nm. The one at the rear is capable of 107 hp and 270 Nm. The drive is transferred to all wheels through what Volkswagen calls an “electric propshaft”. The GTE Sport has a pure electric drive range of 31 miles (50 km).

The concept propels from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 174 mph (280 km/h). Fuel efficiency is just as good as the performance, giving 118 mpg (50 km/l) in hybrid mode.
