Mahindra and Mahindra is looking to expand its electric car portfolio with the addition of two new EVs by 2019. The upcoming Mahindra electric cars will join the existing lineup that includes the eVerito, E2o and the e-Supro.
A report by CarandBike quotes Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra who said
Our first new electric car will come by 2018 and the second one will be launched by the end of 2019 and we are very excited for both.
The next 3-5 years will witness an investment to the tune of INR 4,000 crore by Mahindra in the EV space. According to ET Auto, around 500 crores from the total allocated budget has already been spent.
There is no word on which of its existing products will be turned into an EV. The report by ET Auto claims that an electric version of the Mahindra Scorpio will be released by 2019. However, this seems unlikely as Goenka has already made it very clear that Mahindra is "not taking any of the body on frame vehicles to electric.”
Vehicles underpinned by a monocoque chassis are likely to receive an electric powertrain. The Mahindra KUV100 could be one of the Mahindra products to go electric. Past media reports have indicated that the Mahindra XUV Aero Concept from the 2016 Auto Expo could enter production with an electric powertrain.
Currently, Mahindra manufactures 100 EVs a month. The company intends to ramp up production to 1000 units monthly over by next six months. It is targetting a monthly EV production of around 5,000 units by 2019.
