TVS Motors has established an assembly plant in Kenya to produce the 'Star' series of motorcycles. The new plant goes on stream less than a month after Hero Motocorp commenced its local assembly operation in the country.
K N Radhakrishnan, president and CEO of TVS Motor Co. told Economic Times -
We have just completed our trial and training period and will commence regular production of out TVS Star series of motorcycles from today (July 30th). We also intend to launch two new motorcycles over the next two quarters.
According to the company, the two future motorcycles are specifically designed and developed based on the needs of the African markets and will be made at the assembly plant situated in Nakuru, Kenya.
TVS Motors has been present in the Kenyan market for over a decade and distributes its two wheelers and three wheelers through Car & General and Abson Motors respectively. The two wheeler lineup includes MAX 4R, Star series, Apache and Wego.
As far as two wheelers are concerned TVS enjoys a 27% of market share among similar products in the country. The company expects to reach 40% due to the advantage of the local assembly.
The Nakuru plant is the second overseas facility for TVS after Indonesia. The new plant is expected to boost TVS Motor's presence in the African region.
