Triumph Motorcycles launched itself in India in late November last year, and has since, received "better-than-expected" response, according to Mr. Vimal Sumbly, Managing Director of Triumph India. The UK-based company has sold over 350 units in a span of five months. Encouraged by this, the company has set itself a target of selling 2,500 units in the next three years.
Triumph is in the process of opening dealerships in major cities across India. Most recently, the company inaugurated dealer outlets in Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. By the end of this year, Triumph will be present in 12 locations in India, Mr. Sumbly told The Economic Times newspaper.
Triumph entered the country with a 10 member strong portfolio comprising of four CBU (Completely Built-up Unit) products and six CKD (Completely Knocked Down) products. The CKD products are assembled at a plant in Manesar, Haryana. At the Auto Expo, Triumph added its 11th product in the Daytona 675.
According to Mr. Sumbly, Triumph has larger plans for India. The company bought a small plot of land in Karnataka where a full-fledged motorcycle manufacturing plant could make a new 250 cc motorcycle due for global launch in 2015-16. The exact role of this plant will be decided next year, Mr. Sumbly said.
