The first batch of Revotron petrol engines that power the Tata Nexon was dispatched from Tata Motors' Sanand manufacturing unit in Gujarat on 3 August. The engines will ship to the Tata-Fiat plant in Ranjangaon where the Nexon is produced.
The Nexon's 1,198 cc Revotron petrol engine has been developed completely in-house. It is essentially a turbocharged version of the unit that does duty on the Tiago and Tigor. The 3-cylinder engine has a maximum power output of 110 PS @ 5,000 rpm and peak torque of 170 Nm @ 2,000-4,000 rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the front wheels.
The Tata Nexon diesel is powered by the 4-cylinder 1,496 cc Revotorq diesel with 110 PS and 250 Nm on tap. Unlike the petrol powered unit, the diesel is manufactured at the Ranjangaon plant. It is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. AMTs will join the lineup by the start of the new year. Both variants offer City, Eco and Sport multi drive modes.
Tata Motors will launch the Nexon sometime in September. Dealerships across the country are accepting bookings for the compact SUV for a token amount of INR 11,000. The Nexon's main USP is its eye-catching SUV-coupe form factor. Customers will get a range of dual tone paint shades to choose from as well.
The cabin offers features like automatic climate control and a 6.5-inch floating dashtop touchscreen interface for the HARMAN sourced infotainment system. It supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and users also get access to Tata's ConnectNext app suite. Top end trims also get a wearable key that eliminates the need of carrying around a key fob.
The Nexon will be met with some competition this festive season as the Ford EcoSport 2017, Mahindra KUV100 facelift and the Renault Captur are gearing up for their debuts.
