Tata Motors is expected to bring out a replacement, codenamed Y1, for the iconic 407 LCV by the end of this year, featuring the Ultra narrow cab shown at the recently concluded Auto Expo 2014.
A report on Autocar Professional says that suppliers for the new vehicle have confirmed this development. The new version will be sold alongside the existing 407, as the product is still in demand says R Ramakrishnan, VP, commercial vehicles, CV business, Tata Motors, quoted in the report.
The Ultra Narrow cab referred to earlier is the one that was shown on the 614 truck at the Auto Expo 2014. The new cab gets mechanically suspended seats, drive-by-wire dashboard mounted gear stick and optional features like aircon and GPS navigation units.
In 2012, the Tata 407 had marked its 25th year in the market. Over time, it has received multiple updates to its engine. The current 407 is powered by a 3.0-liter water-cooled direct injection diesel engine that makes 75 hp and 225 Nm of peak torque. It is not clear if the engine will receive an upgrade along with the cab in the upcoming model.
The report also states that Tata Motors wishes to sell 2,000 units of the 407 each month, but company officials haven't confirmed the number.
