The Mitsubishi Outlander may not be the ‘top of the class’ student in India but it is a very popular crossover in developed markets.

Now, in an effort to save the environment, Mitsubishi has unveiled a hybrid version of the Outlander.

Called the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), it is world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV that will be official unveiled at the 2012 Paris motor show later this month. The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid is 4,655 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,680 mm high with a wheelbase is 2,670 mm, and tips the scale at 1,810 kg

It is powered by a 2.0-liter petrol engine which is aided by two electric motors (front & rear). The motors are powered by a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The combined power output is 82 PS and 195 Nm of torque.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV can do a daily run of approximately 55 km only on electricity. Combined with the petrol motor, the range is extended to 880 km. Now here is the part that you have been waiting for - Mitsubishi expects a combined fuel economy rating of 61 km/liter!

You can select three different driving modes:

  • Pure (electric-only)
  • Series (electric motors running with the petrol engine recharging the batteries)
  • Parallel (electric motors and petrol engine working together to provide motivation)

It takes four and a half hours to charge the battery using a domestic socket. A fast charge unit can help finish this task in 30 minutes or less.

Switching into Battery Charge Mode converts the engine into a generator - it can charge the battery whether the vehicle is moving or stationary.

More details will follow as it is showcased at the Paris Motor Show. The estimated price tag is more than £30,000 (more than 26 lakhs) and we don't expect this option to come to India when the new Outlander eventually launches here.
