Mercedes has taken the wraps off the G63 AMG for a mind boggling price of Rs. 1.46 crore (ex-showroom Mumbai).
If you clearly remember, this is not the first high powered G Class launch that you have seen in India. Back in 2010, we brought you all the live updates from the G55 AMG launch floor. But that was then and this is now!
The Mercedes G-Class ( a.k.a The Geländewagen) is an iconic car that owes its roots to the military services. The first G Class was launched some 33 years ago to serve in the military. Since then the armed forces have moved on to more sophisticated and specialized vehicles. The G-Class, on the other hand, thanks to its military credentials, has become a boy toy for rich playboys.
The SUV that is launched in India is the G63 AMG, a performance version of the G-Class that has been honed by the Mercedes’s Affalterbach based performance division AMG.
First unveiled at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show as a replacement to the G55 AMG, the G63 AMG features minor improvements over its predecessor. In fact, the recipe of G-Class has not changed in the last 33 years and that’s probably the charm of this SUV.
The design changes include –
- A deeper new front bumper with large cooling ducts
- A double slat grille
- Side mounted exhaust pipes
- Five spoke AMG alloy wheels
Although it is called the G63 which means that it should be powered by a 6.3L engine, it is not because that 6.3L V8 engine is long dead.
The G63 AMG is powered by a 5.5-litre, twin turbo petrol V8 that generates a healthy 537 bhp of power and 760 Nm of torque. That’s an improvement of 44 bhp and 60 Nm over the outgoing supercharged 5.4-litre V8 powerplant. The engine is mated to a Speedshift Plus 7-speed automatic transmission.
0-100 km/hr comes in just 5.3 seconds and it keeps on pushing till it hits the limiter at 205 kmph. It also achieves a 13-percent improvement in fuel economy because of new technologies such as -
- Spray-controlled direct injection
- An ECO stop/start function
- An alternator that spins only when needed
The interior features -
- Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG style steering wheel, shifter, and gauge cluster
- New COMAND infotainment system with a color monitor
- Carbon fiber trim strips
- Perforated leather seats
Additional features include –
- Distronic Plus radar controlled cruise control system
- Blind Spot Assist
- Partktronic with a reversing camera.
- Trailer Stability Assist and a hill hold function
