The BMW 1 Series would be launching in India on September 3. The 1 Series is BMW's competitor for the Mercedes A Class which was announced in India on May 30.
BMW India will launch the 1 Series with a petrol and a diesel engine. Here are the tech specs you need to know.
The petrol engine in question is a 1.6-liter turbocharged unit producing 136bhp and 220Nm of torque. This engine will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission sending the power to the rear wheels. BMW India is claiming a fuel efficiency of 16.28km/l for the petrol (tested in compliance with the CMVR 1989 which is the official ARAI fuel efficiency figure). It would be introduced as the BMW 1 Series 116i.
The diesel engine would be the 2.0-liter four cylinder we are used to seeing on the X1 and the 3 Series. However in the 1 Series, the power and torque outputs would be reduced to 143bhp and 320Nm. For the diesel, BMW India is claiming 20.58km/l.
For reference purposes, the A Class A180 CDI in India offers 20.06km/l from its 2.2-liter engine. This model which would be launched as the BMW 118d would also get the 8-speed automatic and rear wheel drive configuration.
Other highlights of the 1 Series include its 50:50 weight distribution, Auto Start/Stop system that switches off the engine at a traffic light and the BMW iDrive multimedia system.
BMW India will be locally assembling the 1 Series at its Chennai facility. Prices are expected between INR 20-25 lakhs.
