Yamaha has unveiled the new 2020 iteration of its litre-class supersport motorcycles, the YZF-R1 and the YZF-R1M. The 2020 YZF-R1M and YZF-R1 pack better aerodynamic performance, the latest R-Series design, engine refinement, augmented electronic control features and improved suspension performance.

The 2020 Yamaha R1M and R1 benefit from Yamaha’s experience in competitions like MotoGP, World Superbike and MotoAmerica Superbike races.
In terms of mechanical specifications, the 2020 YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M use the latest 998 cc inline four-cylinder crossplane crankshaft engine. For 2020, Yamaha has retained the titanium fracture-split connecting rods and offset cylinders while the cylinder head, fuel injectors, finger-follower rocker arms, and camshaft profiles are new. The motor is now Euro-V compliant although the power output remains unaltered at 200 HP at 13,500 rpm on the YZF-R1.
The 2020 models also benefit from an all-new Accelerator Position Sensor with Grip (APSG) ride-by-wire system with Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T). The new system claims to eliminate throttle cables, reduces weight and offers a smoother throttle response.
The electronics package works with Yamaha’s proprietary six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The updated suite includes new Brake Control (BC) technology and Engine Brake Management (EBM) system – both of which can be adjusted through onboard Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) and Yamaha’s Y-TRAC smartphone and tablet apps. The smartphone app works in Android only, while the tablet application can be used on Android and iOS devices.
The comprehensive rider aid package includes Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS), Lift control system (LIF), Launch Control System (LCS) and Quick Shift System (QSS) with upshift and downshift.
The shock absorption department on the more premium YZF-R1M includes Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension (ERS) that can be adjusted through YRC and Y-TRAC. The 2020 YZF-R1, on the other hand, uses KYB front forks and a KYB rear shock.
The new bodywork is claimed to contribute to the performance. Yamaha states that the new design creates a 5.3% increase in aerodynamic efficiency. The premium model (R1M) also receives a new carbon-fibre tail-cowl that joins the existing carbon-fibre passenger seat-cowl. Another key ingredient to the package includes the new lightweight, compact LED twin headlights. The bikes would continue to use the tried and tested Aluminium Deltabox frame.
The motorcycle will come equipped with Bridgestone RS11 Battlax Racing Street tyres while the anchoring department will benefit from new front brake pad friction material. The front will continue to use 320 mm discs with four-piston monobloc callipers.
