The Volvo XC40 will be offered only in the R-Design trim with a 2.0 L diesel engine paired with an 8-speed transmission sending power to all four wheels.

The Volvo XC40 is the first vehicle based on the CMA (Common Modular Architecture) platform co-developed by Volvo and its owners Geely. There will be only engine choice on offer in India. It will be Volvo's D4 2.0 L diesel unit developing 190 hp and 400 Nm. It pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. An AWD setup is standard as well. It has a 211 mm ground clearance (standard) and weighs in at 1,684-1,733 kgs.

The Volvo XC40 will be offered only in the R-Design grade. There will be a long list of standard features on offer including an all-digital instrument console, 9-inch Sensus infotainment setup, 13-speaker harmon/kardon audio system, electrically adjustable front seats, driver's seat memory function, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, keyless entry and engine start, power operated tailgate, park pilot assist, active bending lights, radar-based active safety tech and more.

Volvo will offer customers a choice of three colours - Crystal White, Bursting Blue, and Fusion Red. All three come with black roof giving the  XC40 a dual tone look. 18-inch 5-spoke two-tone alloy wheels are standard.

The Volvo XC40 will compete with the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3, and the BMW X1. The sole, fully-loaded R-Design will carry an estimated price tag of INR 40-44 lakhs (ex-showroom). It will be imported to India in CBU form. The XC40 will become Volvo's third SUV offering in India joining the XC60 and XC90.

Globally, the Volvo XC40 has been received very well with the company reportedly looking to increase production of the SUV to meet increasing demand. The Swedish car maker has registered more than 80,000 orders for the XC40 so far. The vehicle was crowned European Car of the Year 2018 beating the Seat Ibiza and the BMW 5-Series.
