One of Maruti's best selling model, Wagon R, is all set for a generational change this festive season. The 2018 Maruti Wagon R will be based on a new platform and, as per a report from Money Control, get an updated engine too.
Currently, Maruti offers the Wagon R with a 1.0 L 3-cylinder K10B petrol engine developing 50 kW and 90 Nm. The report states that the engine will be updated indicating the same unit will get revisions, most likely to make it BSVI compliant. The 5-speed manual transmission and 5-speed AMT choices are expected to be carried over.
While the report states that the new Maruti Wagon R will be based on a new, lightweight platform, it will not be migrating to Suzuki's Heartect platform that underpins the JDM-spec Wagon R and Maruti products Swift, Ignis, Dzire, and Baleno. The Indian-spec Wagon R will retain the current platform, with upgrades to meet the upcoming crash test norms.
The launch of the new generation Maruti Wagon R is not expected to bring about a major change in pricing. Currently, Maruti retails the Wagon R for a starting price of INR 4.15 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base LXi grade. The range-topping VXi+ AMT (O) is priced at INR 5.39 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).
