After testing the G4 SsangYong Rexton (Mahindra Rexton) on the roads in India, Mahindra has taken it off-road to see how it performs on challenging terrains. CarDekho has posted a spy shot captured during this part of the local testing.
Introduced globally in March last year, the G4 SsangYong Rexton is essentially the fourth generation SsangYong Rexton. India will get the latest Rexton as a Mahindra model. The test mule is actually the SsangYong-badged version, but the Mahindra-badged version isn’t mechanically any different.
Unveiled at Auto Expo 2018, the Mahindra Rexton is differentiated with a few cosmetic changes at the front. It has a different radiator grille consisting of thick vertical slats with a chrome finish and thin vertical slats with a high-gloss black finish. This radiator grille, featuring a high-gloss black frame, is more in line with the design language seen on Mahindra models. Another change in the Mahindra-badged version is a chrome strip above this grille.
The G4 SsangYong Rexton is available in 5-seat and 7-seat versions. Mahindra had showcased its rebadged version with only seven seats, and a 5-seat version is not expected. The mid-size SUV will come with a 2.2-litre diesel engine that delivers 178 bhp and 420 Nm of torque. A Mercedes-Benz-sourced 7-speed automatic transmission and a 4WD system are expected as standard. The SsangYong Rexton is available with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission that sends drive to the rear wheels as well. It is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission (diesel).
On the outside, along with the distinctive upper grille, the Mahindra Rexton will feature HID headlamps, LED DRLs and electric sunroof. Its interior highlights will include premium cognac brown leather upholstery, ventilated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with GPS navigation. On the safety front, Mahindra will equip the three-row SUV with 9 airbags and an electric parking brake among other features.

Mahindra will bring the fourth-gen Rexton to India as a CKD import. SsangYong will start exporting the SUV’s CKD kits to our country in the third quarter of this year. Mahindra will assemble the CKD kits at its Chakan Plant. The Mahindra Rexton will compete directly with the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, and Isuzu MU-X. Its launch will take place this festive season.
