Volvo launched the Volvo V90 Cross Country in India in July this year. The high-riding estate is currently imported via the CBU route, but Volvo plans to change that.
The Volvo V90 Cross Country is a niche product in India as there’s not much demand for estates in our market. Spruced up with SUV styling and having enhanced rough-road capabilities, the Volvo V90 Cross Country retails at an attractive price of INR 60 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). To capitalise on its investments and make the V90 Cross Country an even more appealing product, Volvo wants start assembling the car locally.
The latest development is a confirmation directly from Charles Frump, MD, Volvo Auto India. Speaking to The Economic Times recently, Mr. Frump said:
We will start with cars in our SPA platform to assemble locally — S90, V90 Cross Country, and XC60. That is clearly our strategy to broaden the number of cars that are built locally.

Volvo manufactures the V90 Cross Country at the Torslanda Plant in Sweden. In India, it currently assembles only the Volvo XC90, at their plant near Bangalore. The first locally assembled Volvo rolled off the line two months back, on 10 October 2017. The Swedish automaker hasn’t revealed when it will start locally assembling the V90 Cross Country, but now we know that there is a plan to do so.
