New VW Polo to launch in early 2018 in South Africa

The 2017 VW Polo which made its motor show debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA 2017) will be launched in South Africa in early 2018, as per local reports. Volkswagen South Africa will manufacture the car at the Uitenhage plant for domestic and export consumption.

The local media is expecting the new VW Polo to launch with the 1.0 TSI engine which serves on the SA-spec VW Golf.

With an evolutionary redesign, the VW Polo entered its sixth generation. The all-new Polo is 4,053 mm long, 1,751 mm wide and 1,446 mm tall, and has a 2,564 mm-long wheelbase. The B-segment hatchback is now 81 mm longer, 69 wider and sits 7 mm lower. Its wheelbase has grown by 94 mm, aiding for a roomier cabin. The boot space has increased from 280 to 351 litres.

The VW Polo is the second model after the Seat Ibiza based on the MQB A0 platform. Volkswagen is offering three high production volume engines at launch: 65 PS 1.0-litre MPI naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol, 75 PS 1.0-litre MPI naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol and 95 PS 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged three-cylinder petrol. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard across the range. The 1.0L TSI engine model is expected in the South African market.

By the end of 2017, Volkswagen will add six more engines to 2017 VW Polo's engine line-up. These will include 115 PS 1.0-litre TSI petrol, 150 PS 1.5-litre TSI Evo petrol, 200 PS 2.0-litre TSI petrol (GTI variant), 90 PS 1.0-litre TGI petrol-CNG, 80 PS 1.6-litre TDI diesel and 95 PS 1.6-litre TDI diesel.

Volkswagen has launched the 2017 VW Polo in Trendline, Comfortline and Highline grades, and as a 'Beats' special edition. Full-LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED tail lights, second-gen Active Info Display, glass-encased 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless charging for smartphones, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor, Cross Traffic Alert and adaptive cruise control (ACC) are some of the key features of the 2017 VW Polo.

2018 VW Polo GTI
Later in 2018, Volkswagen SA is touted to bring the VW Polo GTI model for driving lovers and enthusiasts.

VW builds the Euro-spec 2017 VW Polo at the Volkswagen Navarra plant in Spain. The new generation Polo is already available to order in Germany and other first European countries. Prices start at €12,975 in Germany.
