The production VW T-Roc had its world premiere in Italy yesterday. At the unveiling, a senior Volkswagen executive hinted that the VW T-Roc could eventually reach India.

Volkswagen's board of management will review a proposal for introducing the MQB platform in India in September.

At the world premiere, Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand's Sales, Marketing and Aftersales chief Jurgen Stackmann suggested that the VW T-Roc is a potential product for India. He said:

This (VW T-Roc) type of SUV is also gaining in importance in Brazil, India, Russia and the USA.

If the Chakan plant is tooled to manufacture MQB models, Volkswagen will probably want to go on the offensive with B- and C-Segment models like the VW Polo, VW Virtus, VW T-Cross (TBA) and the VW T-Roc, in quick succession.

Volkswagen has decided to break away from Tata Motors for joint product development as the investment required for reaping the benefits of the alliance was nearly equal to the investment needed for localising the MQB platform. Developing a new platform is out of THE question as the domestic volumes will not justify the development costs and there's little hope for exports with potential markets like the Middle East, Latin America, Africa among others switching to the MQB platform-based models.
