The current, sixth generation BMW 5 Series (BMW F10/BMW F11) will receive a full makeover and move to its seventh generation this year. The all-new 2017 BMW 5 Series is expected to get a design inspired by the sixth generation BMW 7 Series (BMW G11/BMW G12), and a speculative rendering from Carscoops previews how it may look like in the M Sport variant.
The next-gen BMW 5 Series will be based on the company's CLAR (Cluster Architecture) rear-wheel drive platform that was first used for the all-new 7 Series. This platform, otherwise known as OKL (Oberklasse, or ‘upper class’) platform, will also be used for many other future models, including the next-gen X5 and the X7.
Reports say that the new generation 5 Series will be up to 100 kg lighter, thanks to a significant usage of lightweight materials like carbon-fibre, magnesium, aluminium and high-tensile steel.
The 2017 BMW 5 Series will be available with a variety of turbocharged six- and four-cylinder conventional petrol and diesel engines, as well as two plug-in hybrid powertrains. In the UK specifically, engine options will include B47 2.0-litre four-cylinder and B57 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel units and B48 2.0-litre four-cylinder and B58 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol units.

In Europe and other main markets except the U.S. and Canada, the 2017 BMW 5 Series will mainly rival with the Audi A6/A6 Avant, Jaguar XF/XF Sportbrake (2015), Mercedes E-Class/E-Class Estate, Volvo S90/V90. The new generation 5-er is expected to debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
