Car sales in June 2014 surged 15%, the fastest growth rate in 10 months, but industry body SIAM says that the sales spike is mainly due to the fear of withdrawal of excise duty benefits which were originally due till June 30.
Here is the list of top 10 best selling cars in India, in the month of June 2014.
1. Maruti Alto
After being relegated to the last step of the podium in May by its stablemates, the Maruti Alto launched a comeback in June with a staggering sales volume of 30,499 units. Compared to the previous month's 17,311 units, this is a 76% growth.
2. Maruti Wagon R
The Maruti Wagon R managed to outdo the previous month's top two performers, the Swift twins, to take second place. The popular city car clocked 17,119 units in June, gaining two places compared to May's 11,757 units.
3. Maruti Swift Dzire
India's most popular compact sedan dropped from No. 1 to No. 3 in June as sales stood at 15,990 units against 18,953 units in May. The Dzire is up for a facelift shortly and come August, it will have yet another brand new competitor in the form of the Tata Zest.
4. Maruti Swift
Maruti not only dominated the podium but also sealed the 4th position with the Swift hatchback which registered 13,632 units. However, the hatchback has lost two places as sales dropped by 24% compared to the previous month (17,936 units). The Swift facelift can help the car move up a few places.
5. Mahindra Bolero
The good old Mahindra Bolero continues to be an indispensable cash-cow for the company. At 7,909 units sales, the month-on-month growth has actually declined (8,846 units in May) but the UV managed to gain a place, overtaking the Hyundai Grand i10 in the process. Meanwhile, the next gen model is testing extensively to make the Bolero future-proof.
6. Hyundai Grand i10
The Hyundai Grand i10 has become the fastest car in India to surpass the 1 lakh sales milestone but the hatchback lost fifth place to the Bolero by just 8 units. The Grand i10 posted 7,901 units in June against 9,317 units in May.
7. Honda City
The new Honda City continues to dominate its segment as 7,715 units of the sedan found homes in June, over 7,216 units in May. As a result, the City climbed up from eighth position.
8. Honda Amaze
The Honda Amaze charged from 14th position in May (4,750 units) to steal 8th in June at 7,073 units, an impressive growth of 49%. As of June, Honda has managed to sell 95,445 units of the sub-4 metre sedan since the launch in April 2013.
9. Hyundai Xcent
The Hyundai Xcent settles for 9th position at 7,069 units in June, which is two places down compared to its performance in May at 7,792 units. The compact Korean sedan also lost the second place in its segment to the Amaze though only by 4 units.
10. Hyundai Eon
The Hyundai Eon did good to cling on to tenth spot in June with sales of 6,579 units (9th in May at 6,300 units). The new 1-litre variant of the car was launched in May but there in no noticeable spike in the monthly figure.
