Will manufacture the 2.4 and 2.8 GD diesel engines.
Toyota Industries Engine India (TIEI) has inaugurated the long-awaited engine production plant at the Jigani Industrial Area, Bengaluru. The plant spreads across 22 acres and is completed at an investment of Rs 1,100 crore.
The production capacity of the new plant is 108,000 units/year, and will manufacture the 2GD-FTV 2.4 and 1GD-FTV 2.8 diesel engines that are offered in the Toyota Innova Crysta and the yet-to-launch 2016 Toyota Fortuner. The KD-series diesel engines for the previous iterations of the two models were imported from Thailand. With the new manufacturing plant, Toyota can localize the two engines, which could lower the final costs of the two models.
Both the engines comply with BS 4/Euro 4 emission standards, while an additional provision to upgrade to BS 5 and 6/Euro 5 and 6 can be made with minimum investment and lead time in the future. Toyota Kirloskar Motors believes that diesel engine technology in India will remain an integral part of every automaker, despite the crackdown on diesel-powered cars displacing over 2000 cc that has affected the sales of the Innova and Fortuner in Delhi NCR.
