The Nissan Terrano is the latest product that is aimed at luring the SUV frenzy Indian car buyer. Pre-bookings for the compact crossover SUV which is essentially a rebadged Renault Duster will commence on September 1st.

Even though the Terrano was specifically developed for the Indian market, we reckoned that Nissan could export the Terrano given that the nameplate had been previously used for a global product. The nameplate is 27 years old and has served on three generations.

Speaking during the unveiling of the Terrano, Kenichiro Yamura, President, Nissan India said -

The Terrano will play a key role in boosting Nissan’s sales volume in India. If there is an opportunity, we are willing to export it, but this product is developed specifically for the Indian market.

The Nissan Terrano will be positioned above the Renault Duster. Designers ensured that the Terrano looks sufficiently different from its donor car. The SUV features extensive sheet metal changes and aligns itself with Nissan's global SUV family.

The interior features new rectangular chrome accented centre aircon vents, a different interplay of colors, and revised steering wheel with silver inserts.

The Terrano's dashboard gets rectangular centre aircon vents and a new steering wheel compared to the Duster.

The Terrano borrows engines from the Duster. The 1.6 litre petrol engine develops 104PS while the 1.5 litre K9k diesel motor is available in two states of tune - 85PS and 110PS. The 110PS variant is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission while the rest of the variants are operated using a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Nissan could be looking at exporting the Terrano to select international markets (especially RHD markets) where the name rings a bell.
