Yesterday at the Nissan Evalia press conference, Nissan Motor India Managing Director and Chief Executive Takayuki Ishida made a public announcement that Nissan India plans to launch 10 new models in India by 2016.
These 10 models will also include the models from the Datsun brand which is expected to hit the stands in 2014. This is still a small portion of 51 models that Nissan plans to launch globally.
The recent aggression is a part of Nissan Power 88 strategic plan. This plan specifies that Nissan should gain 8% of the market share with 8% profit margin by the end of 2016. The BRIC nations will be the key focus of this Power 88 plan. To grab a total 8 percent market share globally by 2016, Nissan is expecting 60 per cent of its total global sales to come from emerging markets
The Japanese automaker is looking at various segments such as compact hatchbacks, SUVs, MUVs, MPVs and compact SUVs to make a foray. The company sold 13,000 units in 2010. It more than doubled the sales in 2011 to a whopping 33,000 units. The Japanese automaker in hoping to cross 66,000 units this year and a mindboggling 1 lakh units in 2013.
Of course, Datsun models will play a major part in this hunt for volumes. Two products from the Datsun brand will be launched by 2014, and third would come after three years. Datsun may be initially sold from Nissan showrooms but will eventually get its own dedicated sales channel.
Nissan also confirmed that the Japanese-French alliance (Renault-Nissan) has finally pulled out of the Bajaj RE60 project. Both automakers have started work on their own contenders for the small car market. Nissan would introduce two small cars under the ‘Datsun’ brand in 2014. Renault is also developing a small car (codenamed A Entry) to sit below the Pulse.
