Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) has confirmed to Engineering News SA that the company will launch the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton in mid-2016. MMSA COO Wynand Pretorius said, “We are delighted to confirm the introduction of the all-new Triton onto the local market."
The fifth-generation Mitsubishi Triton is characterized by an imposing grille, bi-xenon headlights, beefed-up body panels and a larger cargo bay. The Triton competes with the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger, which are the top selling pickup trucks that sell between 2,000 and 3,000 units per month in South Africa, according to the report.

For the South African market, the Triton could receive the 2.4-liter MIVEC diesel engine which promises a 17 percent improvement in CO2 emissions. A 6-speed manual gearbox is offered standard in other markets which get this engine.
The outgoing Triton in South Africa, which was launched in 2007, is facing a decline in sales gradually over the past few years. MMSA sold a mere 12 units of the Triton last month.
