Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) has finally introduced its DDIS225 E15A 1.5-litre diesel engine with a 6-speed manual transmission on the Ciaz. The new Maruti Ciaz 1.5L diesel engine variant has gone on sale in a price range of INR 9.97 lakh-11.37 lakh*.
The E15A 1.5-litre diesel engine produces a maximum power of 70 kW (95.17 PS) at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 225 Nm at 1,500-2,500 rpm. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, which is something that is not available on any other Maruti model at the moment. The manufacturer claims that the Maruti Ciaz 1.5L diesel variant will offer a high level of refinement and low NVH levels. This has been achieved through the use of a Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) along with an optimised compression ratio that reduces engine fluctuations.
The Maruti Ciaz 1.5L diesel model has a claimed fuel efficiency of 26.82 km/l. It may be noted here that the new model misses out on the company's SHVS mild-hybrid system, but still manages to outclass the Honda City 1.5L i-DTEC (25.6 km/l) in the fuel economy stakes. The segment-leading fuel economy is courtesy of the new oil-burner's lightweight aluminium-cast cylinder head and block along with optimised engine calibration.
The existing D13A engine, on the other hand, offers a staggering 28.09 km/l. That said, the Fiat-sourced oil-burner will have to bow out by March 2020 owing to its inability to meet the BSVI emission norms. On the other hand, the new DDIS225 motor is currently BSIV-compliant and will be upgraded to meet the tighter regulations closer to the deadline (1 April 2020).
