MSIL announced this week that the Maruti Alto's cumulative sales has passed the 30 lakh milestone. Through different generations/versions, the Alto has been the best selling car in India for over 10 consecutive years. The 3 million units were sold over a period of 15 years and six months (from September 2000).
Speaking on the achievement, R S Kalsi, Executive Director, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki said, “Alto has constantly evolved to reflect the changing India." In addition to the three million units sold in the home country, a total of 3.8 lakh units of the Alto have been exported to over 70 countries including Algeria, Chile, Netherlands, the UK and Sri Lanka which are the model's top export markets. The version sold in Algeria comes with ABS, dual airbags and has adjustable headrests.
The Maruti Alto is offered in two versions - the Alto 800 and the Alto K10. The former is available in a CNG variant apart from the standard petrol version. The Alto K10 is offered with a five-speed manual gearbox and a five-speed AMT (clutch-less Auto Gear Shift Transmission - AGS) is an option. The Alto is available with a driver-side airbag as an option from the entry-level variant in India.
