BMW X2 will appeal to the younger generation of car buyers.

At the 2016 Paris Motor Show, BMW revealed the newest entrant to their ever-growing lineup of 'X' crossovers - the BMW X2. Although it was revealed as a pre-production concept, the final version is expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2018, and could carry most of the concept's elements into production.

Here's a brief pictorial comparison between the BMW X2 and the model it's based on - the new BMW X1.

Exterior:

The BMW X2 belongs to the range of performance-oriented crossovers like the BMW X4 and X6, while the BMW X1 is a more practical option that slots with the BMW X3 and X5. And this is evident by the exterior design. The X1 is taller, narrower and has a wider area of greenhouse than the sleek X2.

The BMW X1 has a bold and eye-pleasing design typical of BMW's latest crop of vehicles, but the X2 takes it to the next level with a dynamic design that, surprisingly, breaks some BMW design traditions. For instance, the kidney grilles in the X2 are inverted and its C-pillar is missing the 'Hoffmeister kink'. Regardless, the result is a design that, according to top critics, is the best they've seen from BMW's X range yet. It would be a shame if the production-spec BMW X2 features a watered-down design of Concept X2.

The BMW X1 will share the FWD UKL platform as well as engine lineup with the BMW X2. The latter will include 2.0L four cylinder petrol and diesel options as well as a 1.5L three cylinder unit. BMW's xDrive AWD system will likely be standard in top-end grades.
