The Maruti Baleno has become the first high-volume BS-VI car in India. The BS-VI Maruti Baleno will be available with an upgraded 1.2L VVT petrol engine and an all-new 1.2L Dualjet Dual VVT petrol engine featuring a Smart Hybrid mild-hybrid system.

Unlike what reports had claimed, Maruti Suzuki has announced the BS-VI Baleno mild-hybrid with its dual-battery Progressive Smart Hybrid system that uses a Lithium-ion battery and a Lead-Acid battery, not the old Proven Smart Hybrid system. The mild-hybrid system provides torque assist and idle start-stop functions. The batteries are charged from brake energy regeneration function.
Maruti Suzuki has upgraded both engine hardware & software along with exhaust system to achieve compliance with the BS-VI emission norms. The engine control software has undergone an upgrade for more precise fuel injection control using various onboard sensors.
The BS-VI Maruti Baleno 1.2L Dualjet Dual VVT Smart Hybrid, available with only a 5-speed manual transmission, has a class-leading fuel economy rating of 23.87 km/l. The fuel economy rating of the BS-VI Maruti Baleno 1.2L VVT isn’t out yet, but it should be higher than that of the BS-IV model (21.4 km/l).
Maruti Suzuki will offer the Baleno 1.2L Dualjet Dual VVT Smart Hybrid in two grades: Zeta and Delta. The company will not upgrade the 1.3L DDiS 190 diesel engine to BS-VI.
