Volkswagen currently does not sell low-end SUVs in India but that’s about to change in the future. The company is considering a Hyundai Creta rival for our market now.

Volkswagen will likely launch the production version of the VW T-Cross Breeze concept (pictured) as its Hyundai Creta rival.

Volkswagen will launch a slew of new models, starting with an SUV, under a new ‘India 2.0’ plan. The company will invest no less than INR 8,000 crore on over the next few years. There are no plans to enter the booming sub-4 metre SUV segment. Volkswagen will continue staying premium and begin its next chapter in India with a premium B-SUV that will compete with the likes of Hyundai Creta.

Speaking to Moneycontrol recently, Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, said: “As a logical step we are looking at the A0 SUV segment, which is one of the fastest growing segments. These are not the sub-4 meter class. We will have something (similar to) the (Hyundai) Creta. Because we think they have the highest potential of growth and business case and fits perfectly in our target group.”

The confirmation of Volkswagen's new B-SUV depends on the MQB A0 IN platform getting approved.

According to a previous report, the model Mr. Knapp is referring to is the VW T-Cross (codename: Volkswagen VW216). For India, this model will utilise a modified version of the MQB A0 platform called MQB A0 IN. It could share some body panels with the Skoda small SUV, which will debut the MQB A0 IN platform. All this depends on the final decision of the localisation of the new platform, expected by mid-2018.
