Hyundai receives 18,000 pre-orders for India-bound Hyundai Kona Electric in Korea

The India-bound Hyundai Kona Electric made its South Korean debut last week. Hyundai has received more than 18,000 pre-orders for the new EV in its home market.

Hyundai started pre-orders for the Hyundai Kona Electric in South Korea on 15 January. The company has fixed an annual sales target of 12,000 units for its electric SUV in its domestic market.

The Hyundai Kona Electric is available with two different powertrains. The basic version has a 39.2 kWh battery that provides a range of 254 km* and an electric motor that develops 136 PS and 395 Nm of torque. It features a 7.2 kW on-board charger with which the battery pack takes 6 hours 10 minutes for a full charging with AC. Using a 100 kW DC fast charger, it takes approximately 54 minutes to charge the battery pack up to 80% capacity.

The long-range version has a 64 kWh battery that provides a range of 406 km* and an electric motor that delivers 204 PS and 395 Nm of torque. This version also features a 7.2 kW on-board charger. With alternating current, the bigger capacity battery pack takes 9 hours 35 minutes to get fully charged. Using a 100 kW DC fast charger, 80% charging is achieved in approximately 54 minutes.

The Hyundai Kona Electric will arrive in India sometime in 2019, as the company’s first EV. The Indian subsidiary will import it in CKD kits, the assembly of which will take place in Chennai. The expected annual sales target for India is 50 units.
