Daimler introduced the facelifted Mercedes S-Class at Auto Shanghai 2017 last week. Here's how the 2017 Mercedes S-Class stacks up against the 2013 Mercedes S-Class.

The 2017 Mercedes S-Class features subtle visual changes on the outside. Up front, the facelifted Mercedes S-Class features new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, new radiator grille, reshaped air dam grille, larger side air intakes and restyled bumper. At the sides, there are seven new alloy wheels available, measuring 17-20 inches in diameter. At the rear, the flagship saloon gets new, crystal-look LED tail lamps, redesigned lower bumper section and redesigned exhaust pipes.


Stepping inside the 2017 Mercedes S-Class, the first major change is with the steering wheel. A more conventional, three-spoke steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls has replaced the two-spoke steering wheel. The next major highlight is the setup of the new 12.3 inch high-resolution displays under one shared glass cover. The 1520-watt Burmester surround sound system now includes a speaker in the overhead control panel and two speakers on the sides.

The mid-cycle refresh has made the Mercedes S-Class more technologically advanced. DISTRONIC Active Proximity Control allows for autonomous acceleration and braking within a speed limit. The new S-Class offers an even better view of the surrounding traffic, thanks to the enhanced camera and radar systems. It now uses map and navigation data to calculate driving behaviour. Remote Parking Assist allows the driver to manoeuvre the vehicle into tight parking spaces or garages through a smartphone app.

The new Mercedes S-Class gets a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

The mid-cycle refresh brings new engines to the Mercedes S-Class, including in-line six-cylinder petrol and diesel units, as well as a new V8 biturbo petrol unit. Additionally, there's also a plug-in hybrid powertrain with about 50 km zero emissions range, as well as a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

The new 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder diesel engine makes 210 kW (286 hp) and 600 Nm of torque or 250 kW (340 hp) and 700 Nm of torque. It will find its place under the hood of the S 350 d 4MATIC and S 400 d 4MATIC models. The new 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol engine develops 345 kW (469 hp) and 700 Nm of torque and powers the Mercedes-Maybach S 560 4MATIC. The new Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC+ sports the AMG 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol engine good for 450 kW (612 hp) and 900 Nm of torque.

Market launch of the 2017 Mercedes S-Class will take place in Europe in July 2017, and is expected in India early next year.
