To be based on the AMP architecture.
According to a report on the Economic Times, Tata Motors will soon start focusing on the premium hatchback and executive sedan segments. The news further bolsters earlier reports of Tata developing a Maruti Baleno rival, codenamed X451 based on the Advanced Modular Platform (AMP).
Speaking to the publication, Tata Motors' President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Mr. Mayank Pareek, said that Tata Motors is only present in less than 60 percent of the total market, and is keen to extend to 100 percent in the coming years. He said -
The 40 percent space that we are not in constitutes some of the very obvious segments. We are not there, for example, in the premium hatchback segment. So that's one obvious wide space for us. Similarly, in the executive sedan segment and compact SUVs we are not there.
Mr. Pareek said that the company has finalised product plans for the next five years, and that many of the upcoming models are in "various stages of development". For some vehicles, Tata is also planning production capacities, the executive said.
The forthcoming premium hatchback will have crossover-derived cues, according to one report. The executive sedan following it will be based on the same platform, and will share plenty of parts and components. Both these products will use four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, with the former getting a turbocharger most likely. According to an earlier report, the X451 hatchback will have its market launch in the 2017-18 financial year.
